One of the Net Income podcasts (direct link to the mp3 file) on Webmaster Radio from last year summer (everyone probably already heard it but me) had an interesting segment reviewing the “Top 10 Dumbest Ideas that have made a fortune online.” Greg Hartnett from Best of the Web and ShoeMoney went through the list one by one during the show. They emphasized that the ideas really weren’t dumb just simple as in “I can’t believe I didn’t think of that.”
One of the common threads that made them successful was their approach to public relations. While some of them spread virally, they were aided heavily by aggressive public relations campaigns by the site owners. In fact, one of them spent every dollar of revenue on advertising and public relations for the first year.
