Starting The Right Small Internet Business For You – Part 2

After you’ve mapped out your goals and your reasons for starting a small internet business, it’s time to think about what kind of internet business you should start. It’s much easier to work on something that you love and, ideally, it’s something that you’re really good at it too.

Yup, it’s passion I’m talking about here. Are you a writer at heart or fanatical about some topic? Any type of site in your favorite niche should work for you in that case. There’s a good chance you’re already doing this as a hobby for free so you should be able to pump out great content in your sleep. But what about everyone else? Are we just left out in the cold?

No, I don’t think so. I have a little different take on the whole passion thing and I’m not going to say you have to be head over heels in love with a niche. In fact, I don’t think you necessarily need to be passionate about a niche at all. Here’s why.

Make Fewer Updates

I might have more than a passing interest in cooking. Running a cooking blog is very different than developing static content websites in a couple of tiny cooking niches. You’ll constantly need to come up with content for the blog. The content sites are often researched, written, and then infrequently updated (sometimes they’re hardly ever touched again). That’s one way to build up a portfolio of websites without being starry-eyed about any one topic.

Learning Is Fun

Some people just like learning about new things and doing research projects. The subject matter isn’t as important to them as long as they get a chance to delve into a topic. Building a content site or writing an ebook might work for your so-so passion niches if you’re that kind of person. That gives you a start date, an end date, and a chance to learn about something unique over and over again. It’s a little like reading a new book in that every website is a new adventure.

Follow A System

Maybe it’s really the process that you should enjoy. You may be indifferent to an industry but absolutely love a certain aspect of your work in it. Someone who likes the process of building a website or researching the content to go on a website might do well regardless of the subject.

Why do you need to keep your websites? There’s absolutely no reason you have to own a website forever just because you created it. A lot of people make good money by creating and selling websites. In fact, I know people doing this almost exclusively. This might be a viable option for people who just like building websites.

Passion In Everything

I’m not passionate about any one thing and maybe you aren’t either. The internet business world in general fascinates me because it’s so different than what I’m used to doing. It’s just a completely different way of thinking. Even the process of finding keywords, which a lot of people hate or skip, doesn’t seem much like work. When I get tired of that then I write. When I get tired of that then I map out a marketing plan. When I get tired of that then I work on building links. When I get tired of that then I work on one of the hundred other things an internet business owner does.

See, I’d get tired of anything, I mean anything, after doing it for a long enough time. In a lot of ways, I’ll never be the “typical” passion driven website owner because of that need for variety. I’m okay with that and it’s working just fine for us. Whether it’s the topic, the process, or whatever, just find something you enjoy and figure out how to make it work for you.

So what are your passions?
